UN피스코, ‘제3회 귀츨라프 글로벌 한글백일장’ 개최

9월 30일 서울시청 시민청에서

사단법인 유엔한반도평화번영재단(UN피스코, 이사장 김덕룡)과 귀츨라프 한글문화원(대표 노광국), 힐링터치 커뮤니티(대표 이성애 목사)는 ‘제3회 귀츨라프 글로벌 한글백일장’을 서울시청 시민청 지하 2층 바스락 홀에서 9월 30일(월) 오후 2시부터 5시까지 개최한다.

이번 행사는 귀츨라프 한글문화원 설립자인 故 주대준 장로(전 청와대 경호차장·전 카이스트 부총장)의 유업인 ‘2032 귀츨라프 한글 세계화 200주년 기념사업기획추진단’ 프로젝트를 위해 지난 8월 1일 체결된 귀츨라프 한글문화원, (사)UN피스코, 힐링터치 커뮤니티 간 업무협약에 의해 마련됐다. 당초 10월 9일 제578주년 한글날을 맞아 서울시청에서 개최하고자 했으나, 서울시청이 10월 1일부터 내부공사를 하는 관계로 9월 30일(월) 오후 2시에 개최하게 됐다.

이번 ‘제3회 귀츨라프 글로벌 한글백일장’은 9월 30일(월) 14시까지 온라인 원고제출을 마감한다. 오프라인 참가자는 14시에 현장에서 제한시간 내에 직접 작성해 제출한다. 응모 대상은 국내 및 해외에 거주하는 학생·청소년부 및 일반부(성인·다문화·외국인)로 나누어 운문(시) 또는 산문(수필)을 심사한다. 원고 분량은 제한이 없으며, 한국어를 전혀 모르는 외국인은 모국어로 작성해 한글 번역문을 첨보해 접수할 수 있다.

공모주제는 ‘세종대왕과 귀츨라프’, ‘귀츨라프와 원산도 감자’, ‘나의 삶과 한글’ 가운데 택일해서 운문(시) 또는 산문(수필)을 작성해 귀츨라프 한글문화원 김동신 총무 이메일 easttrust@naver.com 으로 PDF 또는 JPG 파일로 9월 30일(월) 14시까지 제출하면 된다. 

심사기준은 ▲‘세종대왕과 귀츨라프에 대한 이해도·연결성·창의성’ 40점 ▲‘작품의 구성과 문장력’ 40점 ▲‘내용의 건전성·진실성·감흥도’ 10점 ▲‘작품의 응용 가능성’(음악·미술·영화·벤처창업 아이템 등의 형태로 발전 가능성) 10점이다. 

시상식은 대상(50만원), 금상(30만원), 은상(20만원), 동상(10만원), 특별상으로 진행된다. 부상은 와디즈 농식품 크라우드펀딩을 추진 중인 ㈜푸드웨어 헤이밀 귀츨라프 감자만두에서 ‘헤이밀 상품권’, 한국전해수시스템㈜에서 인체에 무해한 무알코올 살균·소독·세정수 ‘휴레카’를 수여할 예정이다.

한편 ‘제3회 귀츨라프 글로벌 한글백일장’의 주제인 독일의 칼 귀츨라프(Karl Gützlaff)는 1832년 7월 17일부터 8월 17일까지 한국을 방문한 최초의 개신교 선교사이자 의사이다. 1832년 7월 17일 황해도 장산곶 앞바다 ‘큰 섬’(백령도)에 도착 후 한국 서해안을 따라 남쪽으로 오다가 1832년 7월 25일부터 8월 12일까지 충청남도 보령시와 해저터널로 연결된 원산도에 머무르면서 1832년 7월 27일 세계 최초로 주기도문을 한글로 번역했다. 

7월 30일과 31일에는 각각 씨감자와 포도재배법을 원산도 주민들에게 전수했으며, 8월 2일에는 감기에 걸린 원산도 주민들에게 감기약을 나눠주고 치료하고 8월 12일 원산도를 떠나 8월 17일 제주도를 통과해 귀환했다. 1832년 11월 세종대왕이 창제한 훈민정음의 자음과 모음의 특징을 영어와 독일어로 소논문 ‘Remarks on the Corean Lanaguage, Chinese Repository Vol. 1, No. 7, November 1832’를 작성해 세계 최초로 한글의 우수성을 세계인에게 알렸다.

‘2032 귀츨라프 한글세계화 200주년 기념사업기획추진단’

○ 목적: 1832년 7월 17일부터 8월 17일까지 한국에 온 최초의 개신교 선교사 겸 의사로서

 1832년 7월 27일 최초로 주기도문을 한글로 번역, 7월 30일 원산도에 씨감자 전수,

 1832년 11월 세계 최초로 한글에 대한 소논문을 영어와 독일어로 발표해 

 세종대왕이 창제한 한글(訓民正音)의 우수성을 최초로 세계에 알린 

 한글 세계화의 원조(元祖)가 된 독일의 칼 귀츨라프 선교사의 업적을 알리고자 함

A. Purpose and Necessity of Hosting the 3rd Gützlaff Hangeul Poetry Contest

1) Historical Significance and Trade Request

From July 17 to August 17, 1832, Karl Gützlaff (1793-1851), a German physician and missionary, visited Korea aboard the British merchant ship Lord Amherst (Captain Hugh Lindsay) to request trade relations.

Gützlaff first arrived off the coast of Monggeumpo, Hwanghae Province (now near Baengnyeong Island, Incheon) on July 17, 1832. He sailed down the west coast of Korea, reaching Nokdo and Godaedo in Chungcheongnam-do on July 23, and stayed on Wonsando Island from July 25 to August 12. There, he presented Western gifts and a Chinese Bible to the Joseon King (Sunjo at the time) and requested trade.

2) First Korean Translation of the Lord’s Prayer and Introduction of Seed Potatoes

On July 27, 1832, Gützlaff saw that the residents of Wonsando Island were using Hangeul, which had been created by King Sejong, and he learned Hangeul to translate the Lord’s Prayer into Korean for the first time.

Seeing the poverty of the residents, Gützlaff introduced seed potatoes, their primary food source, on July 30, 1832, teaching them how to cultivate potatoes. These were the first potatoes grown on the Korean Peninsula, thanks to Gützlaff's instructions.

On July 31, 1832, Gützlaff discovered wild grapes on Wonsando and taught the residents how to grow grapes and make grape juice.

3) Becoming a Pioneer of Hangeul Globalization by First Introducing Its Superiority to the World

On August 2, 1832, Gützlaff provided cold medicine to 60 residents of Wonsando.

He left Wonsando on August 12, 1832, and passed through Jeju Island on August 17 on his way back.

In November 1832, Gützlaff published a paper titled “Remarks on the Corean Language” (Chinese Repository, Vol. 1, No. 7, November 1832, pp. 276-279) in English and German, where he explained the unique consonants and vowels of Hangeul, introducing the language’s superiority to the Western world for the first time.

389 years after King Sejong created Hangeul in 1443, Gützlaff became the first to spread its excellence to the world, thus becoming a pioneer of Hangeul globalization.

4) Establishment of the Gützlaff Hangeul Cultural Institute and the First Gützlaff Hangeul Poetry Contest

On August 15, 2020, Elder Ju Dae-joon (former Vice President of KAIST and former Deputy Chief of Presidential Security at the Blue House), Chairman of the Korean Christian Workplace Mission Association, established the Gützlaff Hangeul Cultural Institute (represented by Roh Kwang-kuk) in Boryeong, Chungcheongnam-do.

The institute hosted the 1st Gützlaff Hangeul Poetry Contest on October 9, 2020, in celebration of the 574th Hangeul Day, and the awards ceremony was held on November 4, 2020, at the Boryeong City Council's Office.

The 2nd Gützlaff Hangeul Cultural Event took place on October 9, 2023, in various family centers across Boryeong, Chungcheongnam-do, and the awards ceremony was held at Daecheon Methodist Church on October 13, 2023.

The 2nd Gützlaff Hangeul Cultural Event will be held at the Boryeong Cultural Center on October 9, 2024.

5) Hosting the 1st and 2nd Wonsando Gützlaff Potato Planting and Harvesting Festivals

Although Elder Ju Dae-joon passed away on August 1, 2021, the institute continued his legacy by hosting the 1st Wonsando Gützlaff Potato Planting Festival on March 9, 2023, and the 1st Wonsando Gützlaff Potato Harvest Festival on July 13, 2023.

The 2nd Wonsando Gützlaff Potato Planting Festival was held on March 9, 2024, and the 2nd Wonsando Gützlaff Potato Harvest Festival on June 14, 2024, at the Gützlaff Potato Farm run by Elder Jeon Bae-un of Chojeon Church on Wonsando Island.

6) Events Promoting Gützlaff’s Entrepreneurial Spirit

▶ Support for Korean Adoptees' Visit to Their Homeland in the US

The Gützlaff Hangeul Cultural Institute used proceeds from potato sales and donations to support the Korean Adoptees' Homeland Visit Event, organized by Asia Families (led by Grace Song) in Washington, DC, from June 18 to June 28, 2024.

▶ Commemorative Worship and Lecture for Gützlaff’s Entrepreneurial Spirit

Starting from July 1, 2024, the institute has held weekly worship services and special lectures at 7 p.m. every Monday at G-Arche, a cultural art space on the 3rd basement level of Gangnam Station. The events, featuring vocalists, artists, and scientists, aim to widely promote Gützlaff’s entrepreneurial spirit.

▶ Signing an MOU to Co-host the Global Gützlaff Hangeul Poetry Contest

On August 1, 2024, to mark the 3rd anniversary of Elder Ju Dae-joon’s passing, the Gützlaff Hangeul Cultural Institute signed an MOU with the UN Korean Peninsula Peace and Prosperity Foundation (UNPISCO) and Healing Touch Community to co-host the Global Gützlaff Hangeul Poetry Contest, as part of the 2032 Gützlaff Hangeul Globalization 200th Anniversary Project.

▶ Hosting the 3rd Gützlaff Hangeul Poetry Contest in Seoul

In collaboration with the Gützlaff Hangeul Cultural Institute, UNPISCO decided to hold the 3rd Gützlaff Hangeul Poetry Contest at Seoul City Hall to commemorate Gützlaff, the first to spread the excellence of Hangeul to the world, which was created by King Sejong.

Initially planned for October 9, Hangeul Day, the contest will now take place on September 30, 2024, at Basrak Hall, Basement Level 2 of Seoul City Hall, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., due to planned renovations of public buildings in Seoul starting from October 1.

B. Project Goals

The project aims to commemorate Karl Gützlaff, the German physician and missionary who was the first to introduce the linguistic and cultural value of Hangeul to the world, and who thereby became a pioneer of Hangeul globalization.

By exploring the understanding of Hangeul, which was first recognized globally by a German missionary in 1832, and experimenting with its integration into various fields, the project will provide multicultural families and foreigners in Korea with an easy way to experience and learn Hangeul. It will also help them understand the entrepreneurial and humanitarian spirit of King Sejong and Karl Gützlaff.

As part of the 2032 Gützlaff Hangeul Globalization 200th Anniversary Project, the Global Gützlaff Hangeul Poetry Contest will be developed into a global tourism product connecting New York (home of the UN), Germany (Gützlaff’s birthplace), Hong Kong (his burial site), and Korea’s missionary route (Baengnyeong Island in Incheon, Wonsando in Chungcheongnam-do, and Jeju Island), to enhance Korea’s global status.
